Natural disasters (e.g. floods, droughts, landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, cyclones and other extreme weather phenomena) often hit Monsoon Asia. These disasters have inflicted catastrophic losses of human lives and the economies of countries which NARBO member organizations belong to.
Conducting thematic workshops was considered at the 2nd NARBO General Meeting in Indonesia in February 2006 as one of the important activities of NARBO. Based on the NARBO Action Plan 2006-2007, NARBO has carried out a series of workshops on the theme of Water-Related Disaster and its Management in Asian Countries since 2007. This activity was incorporated in the subsequent the NARBO Action Plan 2008-2009 and has been continued.
This serial workshop on Water-Related Disaster and its Management in Asian Countries was held two times during 2007-2008 in Indonesia and Philippines. Several delegates from Asian countries including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam have participated in this serial workshop. This workshop gave definitely a good opportunity for the participants to learn each other about water-related disaster and its management.
The study meeting was held jointly with IWRM training in 2009 in Viet Nam as a follow-up workshop for preparing an interim report on the theme. Participants who came from Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam worked hard on preparing an interim report. The contents of it were primary action plans of each participating country. It is desirable that their primary action plans should be further reviewed and enhanced on the next stages.
